On the occasion of composer Wolfgang Rihm's 50th birthday, his huge Poème Dansé "Tutuguri" was unleashed upon the world in a dazzling, dramatic performance. The work derives its strength both from the enormous forces required to perform it (a massive orchestra - including SIX percussionist, chorus and dancers) and from the compelling manner that the concepts of Antonin Artaud are integrated and realized in Rihm's music. As in the other Artaud-inspired works Rihm composed during the late ,70s and ,80s, (Die Eroberung von Mexico - a music theatre work, text by the composer after Antonin Artaud and two versions of Séraphin), Rihm explores the aspects of ritualualism, primal strength and a totally enveloping sensory experience.

The present recording (made on the occasion of the world premiere) offers for the first time, the complete composition as personally authorized by the composer. "Tutugurri" is not only one of Rihm's masterworks, but is a towering achievement in 20th century music and one of the most effective and frightening realizations of the tormented Artaud's vision for the "Theater of Cruelty".
