Organ Chorales From The Neumeister Collection

For one thing, the 38 chorale settings found here show Bach´s progress away from his models, from Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck through Johann Pachelbel to Dietrich Buxtehude, and toward the Orgelbüchlein. This is not to say that these early works do not occasionally evince a gleam of Bach´s genius - as would only be expected. Hence we can use these pieces to trace Bach´s developement. For another thing, these chorale adaptions can close some of the gaps which show up as blak pages in the Orgelbüchlein, indicating that Bach intended these chorales for his compendium, but never fulfilled his intention.
