Wolfgang Rihm will surely rank as one of the most important Post-Expressionist composers of the late 20th century. Drawing upon the language of Berg and Bartok, Rihm has created a powerful, if at times, elliptical language that is full of elegiac power. How does his music sound? Striking musical gestures, delineated with a keen sense of tone-color ebb and flow in episodes of violence and stasis. Gramophone magazine described Rihm's scores as “…music which neither talks down to intelligent concert audiences nor aims deliberately over their heads, and it has a conviction and distinctiveness which invites rehearings.”
