Calculated Emotion?
The story of how „L ´Enfance du Christ“ by Hector Berlioz came to be is a strange one. The composition was neither planned nor commissioned by anyone, it grew of its own accord, from the inside out, so to speak.
With respect to the middle part of the oratorio, which was composed first, he wrote to his sister Adèle following a rehearsal in Leipzig, „It is truly good, it is naive and touching (don´t laugh!), and it recalls illuminated miniatures like those in ancient missals. Everyone says that I found quite appropriate coloring for this biblical legend, and all are urging me to continue the work...“
It is impossible not to hear the slightly aloof self-doubt stealing over this composer of avant-garde orchestral experiments in view of such musical simplicity. Following the premiere of the complete work, Berlioz made notes in his memoirs that sound like self-defense (against his better judgment?), „the subject naturally gave rise to music that was simple and for just this reason more appealing, not to mention the fact that people´s taste and intelligence have developed with the passing of time.I would have written exactly the same „L´Enfance du Christ“ twenty years ago...“
