This last composition of Olivier Messiaen was commissioned by Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for its 150th anniversary. Messiaen wrote and orchestrated the composition between 1987 and 1991 (the New York premiere was on November 5, 1992). It consits of a series of meditations on the hereafter and heavenly Jerusalem, taken primarely from Revelation of St. John, since six of the total of eleven pieces are based on quotations from Chapters 1, 7, 21, and 22. In addition, the Gospel according to St. John, Matthew and Luke, as well as the first Epistle of John inspired nos 5, 7, 8, and 10 and the Book of Daniel no. 2

Christ is not the only one constantly present in these meditations, however, but also the heavenly bodies, the stars, the colors of the precious stones of heavenly Jerusalem, and birds.

The inner peace of the mystic, the peace of his soul already presaged here on Earth in the radiant kindliness of God – „in the sunlit peace of divine love“ (as the composer entitled the second part of his organ work Le compat de la mort et la vie as early as 1939); the setting to this title is Movement 4, the heart of the cycle Les corps glorieux – the layering of tonal colors, hundreds of chords in the style typical of Messiaen.
