Bach overstepped denominational bounds. While his sacred music to German words, i.e., cantatas and motets, exhibits a rare combination of eloquence, emotion, theology and musicality, his works in Latin rise to the loftiness of their words´ universally relevant character by dint of the Latin language, their fixed offical function and their permanent place in the chruch service. This assords well with the fact that Bach seems to have turned to these "Latin" works particularly in his later years: the Masses thus appear to be an expression of Bach´s tendency, toward the end of his life, to compose exemplary collections of music to be played throughout the ages.
