Concertos For Three And Four Harpsichords

Some of Bach´s solo concertos exist in two versions - both as violin and harpsichord concertos. From this it can be deduced that concertos where only the harpsichord version has been handed down could also be based on missing drafts for violin or other lead instrument. The concerto BWV 1065 ist taken from the Concerto in B Minor op. 3 no. 10 for four solo violins, two violas, violoncello, violone and harpsichord RV 580 by Antonio Vivaldi. Bach may have written the concertos BWV 1063 and 1064 for himself and his two eldest sons, thus putting their probable date of composition at around 1730.
