hänssler CLASSIC is one of the most successful independent labels for classical music in Germany and throughout the world. With an average of 50 – 60 new releases a year, the hänssler CLASSIC catalogue now includes over 800 recordings on CD, SACD and DVD. It is not only our goal to offer standard repertoire but also to offer the adventurous listener opportunities to explore unknown or recently discovered works. From hänssler CLASSIC’s beginning, we have been committed to offering musical firsts – from the first complete recordings of the complete Cantatas of J.S. Bach to the first recording of Osvaldo Golijov’s critically acclaimed Pasion seguin San Marco. Experience and enjoy the world of hänssler CLASSIC, and hear for yourself what has earned the loyalty and praise of critics and lovers of classical music all over the world.

Numerous national and international awards - such as the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik”, the “ECHO” awards, the Cannes Classical Awards as well as the Grammy Award - illustrate this worldwide recognition.

We are grateful that the work of our label is so highly esteemed. Moreover, we know that our success is also due to the diligence and outstanding quality of all our artists, technicians and engineers.

With pride and gratitude, we look back on our achievements: The epic Bach Edition, recorded under the direction of Helmuth Rilling – the complete works of  J. S. Bach on 172 CDs. Critics enthused about it: „A milestone of the music industry“.

Since 2000, hänssler CLASSIC has worked in cooperation with the Südwestrundfunk (SWR), one of Germany’s largest broadcasting networks. This collaboration has both provided a showcase for the ensembles of the SWR as well as historic and archival recordings from the vaults of the SWR. Appearing under the logo of SWR music, you will find hundreds of critically acclaimed recordings for your listening enjoyment.

hänssler CLASSIC has created several unique, thematic series, such as the Ballets Russes collection (already released in 7 volumes with more in planning) that contains the complete ballet music written for Diaghilev and his famous troupe, featuring the music of Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, de Falla, Prokofiev, Debussy and many others. Our Archivreihe presents rare concert recordings and recitals from the 20th century’s greatest  artists - Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Grümmer, Leopold Stokowski, Géza Anda, Ida Händel and many more. We invite you to explore the thousands of hours of musical treasures that await you.

Three great orchestras, a world-class vocal ensemble and one of Europe’s most swinging big bands are on SWR music! Read more about the ensembles and recordings together with hänssler CLASSIC at "About us/Our partners/SWR music".

hänssler CLASSIC’s collaboration with SWR music has been a resounding success, attracting the attention of critics, reviewers, collectors and listeners around the world. Recent awards include multiple honors for the Orchestral Works of Messiaen, recorded by Sylvain Cambreling in celebration of the composer’s centenary, and the audiophile recording of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, recorded by Helmuth Rilling in 2008.

hänssler CLASSIC’s innovative Digital Bach Edition for the Apple iPod®, released in 2008 in celebration of Helmuth Rilling’s 75th birthday marks a step into the future for classical music. While the presentation and packaging of classical music has changed, people’s love for the music itself is timeless and unchanging.
