The Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival

Since its founding in 1986, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival (SHMF) has been regarded as one of Germany’s most prominent international cultural events. The magnificent castles and mansions, as well as the most beautiful churches in Schleswig-Holstein create an impressive backdrop for presentations usually reserved for the most prestigious concert halls and opera houses. Each year the Schleswig-Holstein Festival presents a variety of programs and themes that change yearly focusing on the music and culture of a different country. As a part of the so-called "anbruch" ("dawn") series, the SHMF presents many exceptional projects from each respective country, in an effort to define the essence of each musical culture. In 2001 the SHMF introduced another innovative concert forum - "Text and Music." In this popular series of concerts and recitals, distinguished actors and authors recite dramatic readings and poetry in dialogue with the musical program, adding a creative dynamism to the traditional concert setting.

The "Musikfeste auf dem Lande" ("Music Festivals in the Countryside") are at the heart of the SHMF, offering a very special, family-friendly concert atmosphere. Here, visitors can pack a picnic lunch while they enjoy classical music on some of the most beautiful country estates in the region. 2009 witnessed the addition of a new concert venue -  the Lorenz von Ehren Baumschule in Hamburg-Marmstorf; an impressive all-wood construction with vibrant acoustics. Throughout the festival concertgoers have the opportunity to hear both renowned artists and aspiring young musicians at the beginning of their careers. A special feature for families is the children’s music workshop program. At these workshops, music educators attend to the festival’s youngest visitors where the little ones have the opportunity to listen to or to create their own music. In 2003 the festival launched a special children’s music festival held at Salzau Castle.

Perhaps the single most important aspect of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival is its commitment to providing young musicians with the opportunity to perform with many of the world’s greatest conductors and soloists in an educational setting. Leonard Bernstein founded the festival orchestra academy in 1987, with the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival choir academy following in 2002. Every year, young musicians from around the world are selected to attend master classes at the Lübeck Conservatory, where they have the unique opportunity to learn from and interact with the greatest artists of our time.

Numerous music-loving volunteers have helped to establish Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival as one of the world’s friendliest festivals. In addition to assisting with concert set and helping guests find their seats, these devoted individuals work attentively, and see to the needs and comfort of the guest artists who have come from all over the world, making them feel at home in Schleswig-Holstein. All of this accounts for the uniqueness of this festival in the "Land between the Seas".

In 2002 the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival had a successful launch of the new international jazz festival - “JazzBaltica” at Salzau Castle providing festival guests with even more opportunities for enjoyment.

Every year more than 100,000 visitors come from around the globe to experience the beautiful natural settings, the local hospitality, and above all, the wonderful music offered at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival.

This international celebration of the arts is now finally available on CD for your enjoyment at home.
