Zeitgleich mit seiner letzten Oper "Imeneo" komponierte Händel sein viertes Oratorium "Saul". Kein Wunder also, dass es starke opernhafte Züge aufweist und immer wieder drastische Szenen gibt. Auch instrumental ist der Komponist nicht eben zurückhaltend, sein Orchester ist so umfangreich wie nirgends sonst und er nutzt es effektvoll. Auch der Chor wird mit klangintensiven Ensembles bedacht. Mit anderen Worten: dieses Oratorium ist für Helmuth Rilling, seine Gächinger Kantorei und das Bach-Collegium Stuttgart genau richtig, um ihre Möglichkeiten auszuschöpfen.
